Background
Seattle metalsmith Peggy Foy is a true jack-of-all-trades. She designs and creates the jewelry and other works seen on these pages; she often does her own photography and digital designs, too. In 2011 she curated and produced a gallery exhibition of Steampunk metalwork, showcasing the genre to the Society of North American Goldsmiths for their annual conference. Peggy holds a fine art degree in metalsmithing from the University of Georgia; she is on the Board of Directors for the Seattle Metals Guild, and has lectured with both the Seattle Metals Guild and the Northwest Art Alliance. She teaches classes, workshops, and private lessons in jewelry. During the day she works as a photo editor, honing her digital design skills for a well-known flash sale site featuring Daily Deals for Moms, Babies and Kids.
Peggy’s studio is in the historic Pioneer Square gallery district of Seattle, and she shows at regional fine craft fairs and art jewelry galleries. When she is not at her photo editing job, she is usually hard at work in her studio. In years past Peggy has also been active in the Burning Man community and has participated in a handful of larger-scale art pieces.
Artwork
Peggy's metalwork features forged and fabricated elements that start from raw sheet and wire; she loves layering contrasting colors of metal in a single piece. Some of her designs also incorporate cast elements and found objects, particularly world coins and most especially radial patterns in metal.
Peggy has also explored a little of the world of enameling (glass-on-metal) and is particularly fond of the intricate detail that is possible with fine cloisonnés. She is very interested in textured surfaces in metal, such as the roller-printed and etched patterns that make her way into so many of her designs. Thematically, she is interested in spirituality-in-nature, and finds inspiration from the natural world and from an Art Nouveau aesthestic. She is especially drawn to spirals and rippling, radiating lines - to her these represent waves, energy, currents, and patterns.
